As a first test sample for their new algorithm, the researchers decided to re-analyze all 517 stars from K2 that were already known to host at least one transiting planet. After a technical defect, the telescope had to be used in an alternative observing mode, called the K2 mission, but it nevertheless monitored more than another 100,000 stars by the end of the mission in 2018. In the first mission phase from 2009 to 2013, Kepler recorded the light curves of more than 100,000 stars, resulting in the discovery of over 2300 planets. The researchers used data from NASA’s Kepler space telescope as a test bed for their new algorithm. "This method constitutes a significant step forward, especially in the search for Earth-like planets." "Our new algorithm helps to draw a more realistic picture of the exoplanet population in space," summarizes Michael Hippke of Sonneberg Observatory. René Heller's team has now been able to show that the sensitivity of the transit method can be significantly improved, if a more realistic light curve is assumed in the search algorithm. Their effect on the stellar brightness is so small that it is extremely hard to distinguish from the natural brightness fluctuations of the star and from the noise that necessarily comes with any kind of observation. Small planets, however, present scientists with immense challenges. Large planets tend to produce deep and clear brightness variations of their host stars so that the subtle center-to-limb brightness variation on the star hardly plays a role in their discovery. The maximum dimming of the star occurs in the center of the transit just before the star becomes gradually brighter again," he explains. When a planet moves in front of a star, it therefore initially blocks less starlight than at the mid-time of the transit. "In reality, however, a stellar disk appears slightly darker at the edge than in the center. René Heller from MPS, first author of the current publications. "Standard search algorithms attempt to identify sudden drops in brightness," explains Dr. If a star happens to have a planet whose orbital plane is aligned with the line of sight from Earth, the planet occults a small fraction of the stellar light as it passes in front of the star once per orbit. In their search for distant worlds, scientists often use the so-called transit method to look for stars with periodically recurring drops in brightness. Common search algorithms were not sensitive enough. And they have another thing in common: all 18 planets could not be detected in the data from the Kepler Space Telescope so far. The smallest of them is only 69 percent of the size of the Earth the largest is barely more than twice the Earth's radius. The 18 newly discovered worlds fall into the category of Earth-sized planets. Moreover, small worlds are fascinating targets in the search for Earth-like, potentially habitable planets outside the solar system. This percentage likely does not reflect the real conditions in space, however, since small planets are much harder to track down than big ones. Of these so-called exoplanets, about 96 percent are significantly larger than our Earth, most of them more comparable with the dimensions of the gas giants Neptune or Jupiter. Somewhat more than 4000 planets orbiting stars outside our solar system are known so far. The scientists describe their results in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. The team estimates that their new method has the potential of finding more than 100 additional exoplanets in the Kepler mission’s entire data set. The researchers re-analyzed a part of the data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope with a new and more sensitive method that they developed. One of them is one of the smallest known so far another one could offer conditions friendly to life. The worlds are so small that previous surveys had overlooked them. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS), the Georg August University of Göttingen, and the Sonneberg Observatory have discovered 18 Earth-sized planets beyond the solar system. Disclaimer out the way, it says it's been thinking about potential new roles for Among Us, as well as unspecified Friend List improvements.Īmong Us - now entirely red cross free - launched its Hide and Seek mode at the end of last year, as well as a VR adaptation for Meta Quest, Rift and Steam. Innersloth also addresses some of the game's other upcoming additions in more detail, noting the goal of improved matchmaking will be to make it easier and quicker for players to find games, while the quickchat rework will bring refined dialogue options and easier navigation.Īs for the tantalising "more" at the end of its roadmap, Innersloth does tease a few more future ideas while stressing "this is not a promise" and development will only happen "if we have extra time". During this time, Forest Willard and Amy Liu continued to update Among Us. The studio is remaining tight-lipped about the new map's theme for now, but does promise "all new tasks for you to figure out", as well as more cosmetics and "fun surprises hidden around". Among Us is a 2018 online multiplayer social deduction game developed and published by. Then, later in the year - albeit "in no particular order", as Innserloth notes - Among Us will receive a fifth map, improved matchmaking, a quickchat rework, further collabs, and "more". I understand wanting to take time with updates, but with a game this popular it's important to keep your players interested. The friends list is useless, since it's difficult to know who's who. these are all things we want to work on, and more."Īmong Us' new Hide and Seek mode launched at the end of last year. This game was good when it was new and fresh, but with the lack of updates and no new roles it gets boring very quickly. Innersloth's roadmap is a little light in terms of ETAs, but it's first order of business - user interface and user experience updates for Among Us - are said to be "coming soon". What the Golf? is a cracking indie game made by developers who may not know anything about golf, however, they make up for it in every other department.Developer Innersloth has shared its development plans for the next 12 months of social deduction hit Among Us, confirming the year ahead will bring the likes of improved matchmaking and a brand-new map. It’s packed with humour, tight gameplay, and more courses for you to shake (or throw) your stick at. Despite there being a few duds in the rough, and some being a tad frustrating, you’ll get a lot of enjoyment from it. The physics work wonderfully, and the courses are so diverse and entertaining. It’s crazy to think it has been out for nearly three years, and when the base game originally released, we said, “Triband has crafted a loving tribute to the game of golf without actually being about golf. We hope players will enjoy the new Among Us-inspired What the Golf? levels that are still not really about golf!” Right? Anyway, we’re so grateful to Innersloth for being too uncomfortable to say no after we said please several times. “That’s normal, right? It’s a cool and normal thing to do. “Do you know that feeling when you love a game so much that you start making levels in your own game about it?” says Tim Garbos, Creative Director at Triband. The free update takes players “on a journey through a space station full of Impostors, Crewmates, betrayal, vending machines, surprises, space rockets, UFOs, vents, cats and other vaguely related items that are great for golfing!” It’s yet another free content drop for What the Golf?, adding to an already impressive slew of free updates for players who hate the sport, but love puzzles. Released for Apple Arcade, the update features 35 levels inspired by Among Us, and is also set to release on Nintendo Switch and PC in the future. Triband, the creatures of the ‘anti-golf’ game What the Golf?, has released a huge update inspired by Innersloth’s massively popular title, Among Us.
